"McAllen, the largest city in Hidalgo County, was ranked first in job growth and second in income growth in a Forbes.com survey of “Best Cities for Jobs in 2008.” Thirty miles south of McAllen is Reynosa, Mexico, with a population of nearly one million. More than 100 global manufacturers have operations in McAllen or across the border in Reynosa. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the international bridge between the two cities make them economically dependent.
Edinburg is the Hidalgo County seat. It is home to the main campus for the University of Texas–Pan American (UTPA). The university is the tenth largest in the state and the fifth largest in the UT System. Mission is widely known for ecotourism and is the premiere spot for birding in South Texas. It is home to the World Birding Center headquarters at Bentsen State Park. Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge is recognized as one of the top ten birding sites in the nation.
